Adventure Clean Up Challenge with Pachamama
The “Adventure Clean Up Challenge” (ACUC) runs from April 20 to May 20, and is the first worldwide event of its kind. The creators, Esther Röling and her husband, first toured the entire coast of Hong Kong island for 6 consecutive days in 2016. Seeing the amount of trash accumulated on the shore inspired them to take action. They began by making a comprehensive record of the coastline conditions and bringing awareness to the severity of the issue, and even made a documentary about the situation called “The Loop.”
Later on, Esther met Soledad Riestra, founder of Ecoed Life. Together, they created the Adventure Clean Up Challenge and found teams of volunteers interested in restoring these ecosystems. The organizers identified the 6 worst-contaminated and hard-to-access sites in Hong Kong and assigned a group to each beach. For the challenge, these teams will compete among themselves to achieve the ultimate goal: to design and initiate a creative and effective strategy to remove garbage, transport it to a collection site, and raise awareness in Hong Kong.
